Ongoing work to respond to instances of discolouration in Mount Farran

Uisce Éireann understand the frustration of affected customers and communities in Cork who are experiencing instances of discolouration. Uisce Éireann is undertaking all possible measures to minimise discoloration and to address the underlying issues across the network, including establishing a dedicated Taskforce to manage our response.

We have been actively responding to increased reports of discolouration in Mount Farran in recent days; including undertaking investigations on site, reactive flushing and testing across the area.

Our initial investigations identified a passing valve which may have disrupted the water flow in the area, aggravating sediment in the pipes. Our operations team completed work to address this valve in recent days. We also identified the possible need for an additional hydrant and valve to allow for more targeted flushing in areas with more persistent reports; both of which were installed in the area on Wednesday, 30 October. Following the installation of the hydrant, flushing has been carried out and we will continue to monitor the supply in the area.

As you are aware there is approximately 600 km of watermains in Cork City, 50% to 60% of which are made from cast iron and 100+ years old. Issues such as discolouration, bursts and leakage are unfortunately a common occurrence due to the age and deteriorating condition of the pipes.

Uisce Éireann reiterates its advice to the public not to drink discoloured water.  In the event of discolouration, running the tap for several minutes - we recommend up to 20 minutes - will usually restore water to a clear colour. The water is safe to drink once running clear. If the issue remains unresolved, we encourage customers to contact us directly. The customer care helpline is open 24/7 on 1800 278 278. Customers reporting instances of discolouration help us to determine flushing locations on the network.

Please be assured that while there is no easy solution, we are prioritising the response and will continue to keep all key stakeholders informed of ongoing works and continue to issue updates on the measures being taken to resolve the matter.
