Summer promises improved water supply for Ballinasloe
Before the first half of the year is out Ballinasloe will have a much-improved water supply.
Uisce Éireann has announced plans to replace old water mains at the Creagh Junction with works due to begin in the coming days.
News of this project comes just weeks after work began on replacing 1.6km of old water main along the R446 from Mackney Roundabout to Banerton's Garage.
The benefit from these works for homes and businesses in the Galway town are immense with fewer outages expected to impact customers. The projects will also reduce the amount of clean drinking water lost into the ground.
Gerry O'Donnell, Leakage Reduction Programme Regional Lead with Uisce Éireann, is looking forward to ensuring customers in Ballinasloe experience fewer disruptions to their water supply from this summer on.
"Working in partnership with Galway County Council, we have prioritised leakage reduction works to those areas which need it most. These two projects, which will see the replacement of almost 2km of old water mains, will significantly reduce the number of bursts and outages in Ballinasloe.
"The works will safeguard the supply in the region now and into the future and support growth and development in the area."
Works on both projects are due to be completed early this summer.
Traffic management will be in place to facilitate the works between the Creagh Road (R357) and Church Street (R446) junctions, but local and emergency traffic will be maintained at all times.
Customers may experience some short-term interruptions to the water supply, but the team will ensure that customers are given a minimum of 48-hour notices prior to any planned water outages. Details of any supply interruption associated with the project will also be provided on the Supply and Service Updates section of our website.
Customers can also phone Uisce Éireann on 1800 278 278 if they have any queries relating to the project.
These works in Ballinasloe are being carried out under the Leakage Reduction Programme. Since 2018, Uisce Éireann has invested more than €500 million to upgrade the underground water network across the country by fixing leaks and replacing pipes and we are investing a further €600 million up to the end of 2024.
