Uisce Éireann celebrates successful completion of upgrade works on Carrowroe Reservoir in Co. Longford

We are pleased to announce the completion of upgrade works on Carrowroe reservoir in County Longford. This significant infrastructure improvement project has successfully eliminated all leaks in the reservoir, saving approximately 151,000 litres of water per day. This amount is equivalent to the average amount of water used by 1,135 people per day.

The refurbishment of the old concrete structure will not only enhance the security and resilience of the water supply but will also benefit over 4,700 residents in Newtowncashel, Lanesborough, Killashee, and surrounding areas south of Longford Town. This upgrade will support social and economic development in the region for years to come.

Speaking about completing the Carrowroe reservoir upgrade, Noel Gibbons, Programme Manager at Uisce Éireann, said, "This upgrade will help futureproof water supplies in the area for the next 30 years. It will significantly benefit the local community by protecting the water supply and ensuring a safe, secure, and sustainable source of drinking water."

Uisce Éireann's commitment to biodiversity and sustainability is highlighted by Noel, who noted that the 1,157 tonnes of subsoil was excavated and repurposed onsite. The reservoir embankment is now home to hundreds of wildflowers, enhancing biodiversity and contributing to our circular economy.
