Water mains upgrade works completed in Glanworth
Uisce Éireann, working in partnership with Cork County Council, has completed the replacement of over 2.3km of problematic watermains in Glanworth with new modern pipes.
The completion of this project is another milestone in Uisce Éireann's National Leakage Reduction Programme.
Commenting on the completion of the project, Steven Blennerhassett from Uisce Éireann, said: "The importance of replacing such ageing and failing watermains cannot be underestimated. The upgrade will significantly improve the drinking water quality, reduce the instances of bursts, eliminate existing leaks and reduce the amount of clean drinking water lost to leakage. I'm sure this is welcomed news to the Glanworth community as there were previous disruptions to their water supply due to these aging pipes."
This project is another example of how Uisce Éireann is working in partnership with Local Authorities to provide a more reliable water supply and reduce leakage. Fixing leaks can be complicated but Uisce Éireann is making progress. In 2018 the rate of leakage nationally was 46%, by the end of 2020 it was reduced to 40%. We are currently on course to achieve a national leakage rate of 38% by the end of 2021.
Steven added: "We would like to thank everyone for their patience whilst we carried out this section of the Uisce Éireann National Leakage Reduction Programme. The new watermains and service connections will help conserve this precious resource and improve levels of services for homes and businesses in the area now and into the future."
The works were carried out on behalf of Uisce Éireann by Ward and Burke Limited and were completed ahead of schedule; they were expected to be completed by mid-October.
The National Leakage Reduction Programme helps provide a more reliable water supply to Irish communities by reducing high levels of leakage and improving water quality. Its delivery represents an investment of over €500 million between 2017 and the end of 2021 to reduce leakage and replace old pipes on the water network.
