Water savings for Shrule supply
2022 promises to bring a more reliable water supply to homes in Shrule with work to upgrade water mains due to get underway shortly. A 1.6km stretch of old water mains, prone to leakages, along the Dalgan Road will be replaced with modern pipework.
Uisce Éireann, in partnership with Mayo County Council, will begin work on site in the coming days with the project due to be completed by the end of March. The new pipes will not only reduce disruptions to customers from bursts and outages, but it will reduce the amount of clean water lost underground.
Water quality will improve and savings will be made on operation and maintenance of the network.
Outlining the benefits of the works, Declan Cawley, Networks Regional Lead with Uisce Éireann, said: "These essential works along the L1616 will strengthen and reinforce the water network in the South Mayo area. There will be an immediate impact for customers".
In order to deliver this essential upgrade, there may be short term interruptions to the water supply in the area and traffic management will be in place.
However, the project team will ensure that customers are given a minimum of 48 hours' notice prior to any planned water interruptions and areas of work will be limited to short distance to minimise impact.
The mains replacement in Shrule is another example of Uisce Éireann's commitment to driving down leakages in Mayo.
By the end of 2021 the delivery of the National Leakage Reduction Programme will see €500m invested in reducing the level of leakage across the country by fixing and replacing old and damaged water mains. This will ensure a safe, reliable water supply, which is vital for our health, our environment and our growing population and economy.
Uisce Éireann is responsible for the delivery of all public water and wastewater services in Ireland. We are committed to continuously upgrading and developing critical infrastructure to support the growth needed in housing and across our economy, while protecting the environment and safeguarding water supplies.
