We continue to invest in Tullow Town as work to replace old watermains to secure a more reliable water supply will commence in the coming weeks.

The works, which are being carried out under Uisce Éireann’s national Leakage Reduction Programme, involves the replacement of more than 2.1km of aging water mains with new, modern pipes. Crews will be carrying out works in a phased basis in the town centre, starting on Mill Street Lower working towards Mill Street Upper, then along Church Street, The Course/Crosskeys, Old Chapel Lane, Bishops Street and John’s Street.

Areas of work will be limited to short sections to minimise impact on customers. Traffic management in the form of a stop/go system and some road closures will be in place during these periods of work. Local and emergency traffic access will always be maintained.

The works will benefit residents and businesses by reducing instances of bursts and other supply disruptions and improving the operation of the network to reduce the risk of further maintenance work being required in the future. It will also provide a more reliable supply of clean water by eliminating the challenges associated with aging cast iron mains.

Dave Murphy, Programme Manager with Uisce Éireann, said that customers in Tullow Town can be assured of a more secure and reliable supply of drinking water in 2025 once the mains replacement works are completed. “Not only will these upgrades result in fewer leaks, but the new pipes will also significantly lower the instances of bursts and outages on the network, leading to a more secure supply for local community. Finding and fixing leaks in the network is an ongoing challenge for us at Uisce Éireann but it is one we are firmly committed to meeting.”

The works will be carried out on behalf of Uisce Éireann by Shareridge and are expected to be completed by September 2025. Since 2018, Uisce Éireann has invested more than €500 million to upgrade the underground water network across the country through the delivery of the national Leakage Reduction Programme. Uisce Éireann is investing a further €250 million every year up to the end of 2030 – fixing leaks and replacing pipes to provide a more reliable water supply. Uisce Éireann is on target to reduce the national rate of leakage to 25% by 2030, from a high point of 46% in 2018.
