Works commence on the Roscommon Town Main Drainage Scheme project
Uisce Éireann, working in partnership with Roscommon County Council, has commenced works on the Roscommon Town Main Drainage Scheme project to safeguard the environment and provide for future growth and development in the town. When completed, the €20 million project will reduce the risk of sewer flooding in Roscommon Town and improve water quality in the River Jiggy and River Hind. It will also increase the capacity of the sewer network, providing a platform for future population growth and economic development.
The project involves the construction of approximately 7.2km of new sewer infrastructure and rising mains. New/upgraded pumping stations will be constructed at the existing wastewater treatment plant and at Circular Road, Castlerea Road, Ardsallagh and Ballinagard. Six of the existing storm water overflows will also be upgraded and a further six decommissioned.
Outlining the benefits of these essential works Eunan Canavan, Regional Infrastructure Lead with Uisce Éireann, explained: "Uisce Éireann is committed to protecting the local environment and supporting the growth of homes and businesses. This major upgrade of the sewer network will ensure that the wastewater infrastructure is in place to support ongoing development in this thriving town.
"To facilitate the safe delivery of the works, some local road closures and traffic management will be in place and the community will be notified of this in advance. Alternative routes will be available and diversions will be clearly sign-posted. Local and emergency access will be maintained at all times. The first section of works will involve the construction of new sewer infrastructure at Antogher Road and Circular Road and site clearance works at Castlerea Road, Ballinagard and Ardsallagh in preparation for construction of new/upgraded pumping stations.
"Together with our partners, Roscommon County Council and GMC Utilities Group, we would like to thank customers for their cooperation and patience while we complete this essential job and we will continue to engage with local stakeholders as the works progress to minimise any disruption associated with this vital project."
Uisce Éireann continues to work at this time with our Local Authority partners, contractors and others to safeguard the health and well-being of both staff and the public and to ensure the continuity of critical drinking water and wastewater services.
