Works continue to drive down leakage across Galway City
Securing the water supply in Galway City remains a top priority for Uisce Éireann as the intensive campaign continues to drive down leakage across the city and improve the water supply to homes and businesses.
The works continue to be delivered as part of Uisce Éireann's national Leakage Reduction Programme which continues to deliver significant benefits to the local community including improved water quality, a more secure water supply and considerable water savings.
Working in partnership with Galway City Council, Uisce Éireann will replace almost 2km of old and damaged water mains along Kingston Road. These old pipes will be replaced with new, modern pipework resulting in significant water savings and improved water supply.
Speaking about the project Gerry O'Donnell, Leakage Reduction Programme Regional Lead with Uisce Éireann said: "The works will start at Knocknacarra Cross and will progress towards Threadneedle Road over the coming weeks. Uisce Éireann acknowledges the ongoing co-operation and patience of local residents and businesses in Galway City while we continue to deliver these vital water network improvement works to improve the water supply. The size and scale of the leakage challenge nationally is well documented. The completion of these works will safeguard the water supply in Galway City now and into the future."
The works will also involve laying new water service connections from the public water main in the road to the front of the customers' property boundaries and connecting it to the customer's water supply.
In order to minimise traffic disruption, night time works will take place from Tuesday 7 June until Sunday 12 June, with temporary traffic lights in place. From Monday 13 July, day time works will commence and temporary traffic lights will be manned until 9.30am each day, and again after 4.30pm. Timed temporary traffic lights will be in operation from 9.30am - 4.30pm daily. Local and emergency traffic will always be maintained.
The works may involve some short-term supply interruptions which we understand may cause inconvenience. The project team will ensure that customers are given a minimum of 48 hours' notice prior to any planned water interruptions. The works are being carried out on behalf of Uisce Éireann by Farrans Construction and are expected to be completed the end of August.

Uisce Éireann has invested over €500 million between 2017 and 2021 to reduce leakage and replace old pipes on the public water network. We are investing a further €250 million every year up to the end of 2030. Fixing leaks can be complicated but we are making progress. In 2018 the rate of leakage nationally was 46%, by the end of 2021 it was reduced to 38%. We are on track to achieve a national leakage rate of 25% by the end of 2030.
