Repairs to major burst water main underway in Galway City
Uisce Éireann working in partnership with Galway City Council have confirmed that water supply has been restored to almost all areas, but low pressure issues continue this morning after a major burst to a watermain on Siobhan McKenna Road yesterday. Emergency repairs were completed yesterday to the burst watermain supplying the Clifton Hill and Tonabrucky reservoirs; however low water pressure continues to be experienced in areas on the western outskirts of the city today, as Tonabruckey Reservoir continues to refill, having emptied yesterday afternoon.
Water supply was successfully restored overnight to almost all areas supplied from Tonabruckey Reservoir, in Knocknacarra-north of Western Distributor Road, Rahoon, and the areas beyond Knocknacarra and towards Barna and Moycullen. However, the reservoir level is still critically low, so pressure will not be restored to normal levels until this evening. In an effort to restore supply in these areas and to allow the reservoir to refill, water supply to Moycullen and areas between the city and Barna is going to be turned off now until 3pm and will be restored to these areas from 5pm.
Speaking about this Tim O'Connor, Uisce Éireann, said, "Emergency repairs to the burst watermain were successfully completed yesterday and although water is being restored to the area, we are dealing with calls from customers where there is low pressure in higher areas and especially in the Tonabruckey area. We understand the inconvenience unplanned outages can have on customers and we appreciate your patience as we work to return the water supply to homes and businesses as quickly as possible."
Tim continued: "We are urging water consumers to conserve water as much as possible at this time, while acknowledging it is important to continue to follow the HSE guidance on hand-washing."
Uisce Éireann is encouraging customers to conserve water while water supply to effected customers is returned. There are ways to conserve water that will not impact on hygiene or handwashing. Simple water conservation efforts can have a big impact on reducing demand on the supply such as not running taps needlessly, taking showers instead of baths and to postpone using dishwashers and washing machines where possible. There are lots more tips on how to conserve water in your home on the Water Conservation section of our website.
Uisce Éireann is working at this time, with our Local Authority partners, contractors and others to safeguard the health and well-being of both staff and the public and to ensure the continuity of critical drinking water and wastewater services.
Uisce Éireann understands the inconvenience when a burst occurs and thanks customers for their patience while we repaired the burst and restore normal supply to impacted customers.
