Works to upgrade and improve water supply on Inis Oírr
Is fócas ríthábhachtach é de chuid Uisce Éireann an soláthar uisce a dhaingniú ar Inis Oírr agus tá clár oibreacha chun tosú an tseachtain seo chugainn ar an Oileán chun sceitheadh a laghdú agus an soláthar uisce do bhailte agus do ghnólachtaí a fheabhsú. Leanfar de na hoibreacha sin a chur chun feidhme mar chuid de Chlár Laghdaithe Sceite náisiúnta Uisce Éireann.
Agus é ag obair i gcomhpháirtíocht le Comhairle Contae na Gaillimhe, déanfaidh Uisce Éireann píobáin nua chomhaimseartha a chur in ionad beagnach 1km de shean-phríomhlíonra uisce chun soláthar uisce níos iontaofa a sholáthar agus chun ardleibhéil sceite a laghdú.
Ag labhairt dó faoi na hoibreacha, dúirt Gerry O'Donnell, Ceannasaí Réigiúnach Chlár Laghdaithe Sceite Uisce Éireann: "Tá áthas mór ar Uisce Éireann na hoibreacha athsholáthair príomhlíonra uisce ríthábhachtacha seo a chur chun feidhme ar Inis Oírr, oibreacha a bheidh chun leasa an phobail áitiúil agus sceitheadh á laghdú agus soláthar uisce níos iontaofa á sholáthar do bhailte agus do ghnólachtaí ar an Oileán."
Dúirt Gerry ansin: "Tugann Uisce Éireann aitheantas do chomhoibriú leanúnach agus foighne an phobail áitiúil ar Inis Oírr agus muidne ag leanúint de na hoibreacha feabhsaithe líonra uisce ríthábhachtacha seo a chur chun feidhme d'fhonn an soláthar uisce a fheabhsú."
Áireofar leis na hoibreacha freisin naisc seirbhíse uisce nua a leagan síos ón bpríomhphíobán uisce poiblí sa bhóthar chuig teorainneacha réadmhaoin na gcustaiméirí agus é a nascadh le soláthar uisce na gcustaiméirí.
D'fhéadfadh go gcuirfí isteach ar sholáthairtí ar bhonn gearrthéarmach de bharr na n-oibreacha seo, agus tuigimid go gcruthódh sé seo trioblóid áirithe. Cinnteoidh an fhoireann tionscadail go dtabharfar fógra 48 n-uaire an chloig ar a laghad do chustaiméirí roimh aon bhristeacha sa soláthar uisce atá beartaithe.
Is é Farrans Construction Ltd a dhéanfaidh na hoibreacha thar ceann Uisce Éireann agus táthar ag súil go gcuirfear i gcrích iad i Mí Iúil.
Is sampla amháin é an tionscadal seo den obair atá á déanamh ag Uisce Éireann i gcomhpháirtíocht le Comhairle Contae na Gaillimhe chun sceitheadh a laghdú gach lá. Bíonn castacht ag baint le ligin a dheisiú uaireanta, ach tá dul chun cinn á dhéanamh againn. Sa bhliain 2018, ba é 46% an ráta sceite náisiúnta, faoi dheireadh na bliana 2021 bhí sé íslithe go dtí 38%. Táimid ag súil go n-éireoidh linn ráta sceite náisiúnta de 32% a bhaint amach faoi dheireadh na bliana 2024. Chun tuilleadh faisnéise a fháil maidir le sceitheadh a laghdú, tabhair cuairt ar leathanach ár gClár Laghdaithe Sceite.

Securing the water supply on Inis Oírr remains a vital focus for Uisce Éireann with a programme of works due to begin next week on the Island to drive down leakage and improve water supply to homes and businesses. The works continue to be carried out as part of Uisce Éireann's national Leakage Reduction Programme.
Working in partnership with Galway County Council, Uisce Éireann will replace almost 1km of old water mains on the Island with new, modern pipes which will provide a more reliable water supply and reduce high levels of leakage.
Speaking about the project Gerry O'Donnell, Leakage Reduction Programme Regional Lead with Uisce Éireann said: "Uisce Éireann is delighted to deliver these vital water mains replacement works on Inis Oírr, which will benefit the local community by driving down leakage while providing a more secure water supply for homes and businesses on the Island."
Gerry continued: "Uisce Éireann acknowledges the continued co-operation and patience of the local community on Inis Oírr while we continue to deliver these vital water network improvement works to improve the water supply."
The works will also involve laying new water service connections from the public water main in the road to the front of the customers' property boundaries and connecting it to the customer's water supply.
The works may involve some short-term supply interruptions which we understand may cause inconvenience. The project team will ensure that customers are given a minimum of 48 hours' notice prior to any planned water interruptions.
The works will be carried out on behalf of Uisce Éireann by Farrans Construction and are expected to be completed in July.
This project is one example of how Uisce Éireann is continuing to work in partnership with Galway County Council to reduce leaks every day. Fixing leaks can be complicated but we are making progress. In 2018 the rate of leakage nationally was 46%, by the end of 2021 it was reduced to 38%. We are on track to achieve a national leakage rate of 32% by the end of 2024.
