Asset management and operation

Managing assets and operations

WAP Action Ref

Over-arching measure

Measure details

Managing our wastewater assets and operations is vital for protecting and restoring water bodies. Activities include undertaking ongoing risk assessments, implementing preventative measures, enhancing contingency planning, incident response and management, and health and safety management. Our dedicated National Operations Management Centre operates around the clock ensuring real-time data analysis and coordination and providing support in managing operational incidents, system disruptions, and emergencies. Our approach aims to optimise performance, ensure compliance with environmental standards, and enhance overall system resilience.

Process Optimisation

WAP Action Ref

Over-arching measure

Measure details

Activities and interventions aimed at improving compliance with environmental legislation, improving efficiency, reducing energy consumption and enhancing treatment performance. All of our WWTPs have plans in place for monitoring and tracking critical control parameters, and describing the actions required at each WWTP to ensure it is operating optimally, minimising costs and protecting the environment by improving the quality of the effluent, with a specific focus on the reduction of nutrient loads.

Maintenance Programmes

WAP Action Ref

Over-arching measure

Measure details

Programmes aimed at ensuring that assets continue to achieve the required standards. This involves the replacement of failed or failing assets on a like-for-like basis to maintain the existing level of service and compliance on a prioritised basis to ensure that works are targeted at the right location in order to reduce the likelihood of asset failure, minimise the impact to customers and the environment and increase the resilience of our assets. Activities include developing standard operating procedures, regular training for staff on procedures and emergency response actions, and regular site inspections and equipment checks.

Source Control and Licencing

WAP Action Ref

Over-arching measure

Measure details

Activities aimed at monitoring and controlling loads entering our sewers and WWTPs, including regulating and limiting the discharge of pollutants at their origin, ensuring that incoming wastewater meets quality standards and protecting the treatment process, public health, and the environment. Activities include a national trade effluent charging framework, trade effluent risk assessment and licencing and enforcement where necessary. A Fats, Oils and Greases (FOG)s programme aims to prevent blockages in the network by restricting the discharge of FOGs from food service establishments.

Sludge Hub (Bioresource) Centres

WAP Action Ref

Over-arching measure

Measure details

Our sludge hub (or bioresource) centres will optimise the balance between treatment and transport costs, ensuring our sludge can be treated more efficiently for re-use. The new Regional Biosolids Storage Facility for Dublin will achieve efficiency in the management of the wastewater network over the long term and will ensure storage of treated biosolids from WWTPs in the great Dublin area during the times of the year when land spreading is prohibited.
