Project Benefits
The Vartry Water Supply Scheme upgrade project ensures the secure supply of clean water for 200,000 people in North Wicklow and South Dublin, ensuring compliance with requirements set out in the European Union Drinking Water Directive and National Drinking Water Regulations. These works will also ensure that this critical water supply network can operate safely through any intense rainfall events.
Plans are also underway to extend the catchment area for the Vartry Water Supply Scheme. This will secure the water supply to areas of Mid Wicklow including Rathdrum, Aughrim, Annacurra, Avoca, Ballinaclash, Roundwood, Laragh, Annamoe, Redcross, Conary and Glenealy. These areas are currently served by vulnerable water sources. These sources have been identified by the Environmental Protection Agency as being at risk of failure to meet the current drinking water regulations for trihalomethanes (THMs) and cryptosporidium. This will be possible through various improvements within the Greater Dublin Water Supply area.
